The Mayor Gallery’s new exhibition Women of Pop includes two paintings by Pauline Boty, “Untitled (Sunflower Woman)” from 1963 and “Untitled (Red, Yellow, Blue Abstract)” from 1961, together with works by Evelyne Axell, Sue Dunkley and Jann Haworth and runs to 23 October.
.
“In our viewing room at The Mayor Gallery, five works by four artists who shaped Pop art and whom the gallery has shown long before the current reappraisal: Pauline Boty’s The Only Blonde in the World at the gallery in 1998 and Evelyne Axell’s Érotomobiles in 2003.
.
Axell’s Érotomobile II (1965) belongs to the series that made her name, where the car becomes a vehicle for female desire rather than its display.
.
Boty is represented twice: Untitled (Red, Yellow, Blue Abstract) (1961) made two years before Untitled (Sunflower Woman) (1963), the point at which her abstraction turns to the figuration and image-world of magazines and film.
.
Sue Dunkley’s Untitled (1970) from the short series behind Grief, now in the Tate collection, made from press photographs of the Kennedy assassinations and the mass public mourning that followed.
.
Jann Haworth’s String Crazy Hired Man II (2004) uses sewn canvas and craft materials expanding what a Pop object could be.
.
The paintings are installed in our lower gallery and can be viewed on request, please enquire during your visit.” [from the Mayor Gallery website]
